In the person body plan, there are three significant fluid compartments that space functionally interconnected. These room the (1) intracellular liquid compartment, (2) interstitial fluid, and (3) plasma. Fluid, molecules, and ions flow across physical obstacles between the fluid compartments. The physical obstacle separating the intracellular liquid compartment (i.e., cytoplasm) and also the interstitial liquid is the cabinet plasma membrane. The capillary endothelium is the physical barrier that separates the interstitial liquid from plasma. Nutrient molecule traveling in the blood must an initial cross the capillary endothelium to get in the interstitial fluid. They then should cross the plasma membrane to enter the cytoplasmic compartment the cells. Waste products produced by cell follow the reverse path from the cytoplasmic compartment to plasma. The left diagram permits for a better demonstration that the relationship between the intracellular fluid, interstitial fluid, and also plasma, however, the loved one size of each of the compartment is not attracted to scale. The right diagram mirrors the three significant fluid compartments drawn to scale. The intracellular liquid compartment contains most the the water in the body (~67% that total). Interstitial fluid consists of ~25% the the complete body water. Plasma is the smallest liquid compartment (~8% of total body water). Note that this diagram places focus only on these three significant fluid compartments. Because that a complete diagram the body fluid compartments, check out body fluid compartments the a 70-kg man and body fluid compartments of a 55-kg woman.
